The Way of Imperfection is a spiritual memoir written as an intimate dialogue between my older and younger self. Moving across time and memory, the book reflects on music, faith, vocation, beauty, suffering, imperfection, and grace, while exploring the interior life beneath the visible life of the creative artist.

At its heart lies a simple question: What would I say to my younger self with what I know today? The question arises not from regret, but from tenderness toward the young artist I once was and toward the many attachments surrounding success, identity, recognition, and self-sufficiency that I could then only sense but not fully understand.

Inspired by Saint Teresa of Ávila’s The Way of Perfection and other influential voices in Catholic spirituality, the book begins at the restless and unfinished place where the spiritual journey so often takes root. It follows the gradual realization that we are not the ultimate source of the gifts we carry, and that our deepest worth rests not in talent, productivity, recognition, or success, but in being before God.

Through a conversation that moves between past and present, The Way of Imperfection considers how suffering, forgiveness, and surrender may become places of transformation, and how grace continues to work through lives that remain unfinished. 

In this light, imperfection is not a complacent indulgence in brokenness, but an openness through which grace may begin to work more freely. To be imperfect is to offer one’s unfinished self to the hands that alone can shape it without destroying it, knowing the vessel will always remain clay. And here, perhaps, the deepest paradox emerges: the true danger is not falling short, but succeeding without love.

Within the Veil

Volume III: The Unitive Stage

Friends and Colleagues,

 

I am writing to share the completion of the Within the Veil trilogy with the release of Within the Veil, Volume III: The Unitive Stage. Recorded in Philadelphia with my longtime friend and pianist Mark Kramer, this final chapter marks the culmination of a deeply spiritual and creative journey.

 

Inspired by the mystical vision of St. Teresa of Ávila’s Interior Castle, the trilogy follows the soul’s progression toward union with God through the Purgative, Illuminative, and, finally, Unitive stages.

 

In this concluding volume, the music finds its home in dialogue, silence, and the trust made possible through spontaneous counterpoint, as saxophone and piano gradually enter into prayer within a veil of total surrender.

The Trilogy Complete

Though recorded as a continuous, unscripted performance, the music revealed three distinct movements, later organized into volumes reflecting the spiritual progression of The Interior Castle.

Notes and Reflections

Recently, I have stepped away from the noise of social media in search of more room for reflection, thoughtful dialogue, and more meaningful forms of connection.

 

That distance has also given me space to bring my spiritual memoir, The Way of Imperfection, closer to completion. Drawing on St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Josemaría Escrivá, Dorothy Day, and others, the book reflects on music, faith, vocation, and the relationship between artistic and spiritual formation.

 

I look forward to sharing more as the work continues.

A NOTE OF GRATITUDE

"A Love Supreme"

KoC Charity Jazz Series

 

This spring, we completed the first edition of A Love Supreme, a three concert charity jazz series inspired by John Coltrane’s spirit of prayer in music.

 

The series exceeded its fundraising goals, brought together musicians, volunteers, friends, and neighbors, and introduced many in our community to live jazz for the first time.

 

My sincere thanks to all the artists, the Knights of Columbus, my wife Lucy for preparing meals for the musicians, and everyone whose generosity made the series possible.

 

Above all, I remain grateful for God’s providence throughout the project.

 

Plans for a second edition are already underway.
